When buying insurance there are certainly no shortage of options of insurance agents who want us to purchase our insurance through them. There are however, major differences in the way insurance companies choose to distribute their insurance.
Companies like Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide have agents who only sell their products. These agents are considered "captive." They represent the insurance company when speaking to you, the consumer. Many believe agents in this situation cannot always have the consumers best interest in mind because they have to try to sell their product.
On the other hand, Independent Agents have access to a variety of companies. They can offer different product offerings and usually provide you with lower overall cost to meet your insurance needs. Independent Agents represent you instead of the insurance company. They work for you, not the insurance company.
The next time it is time for you to shop your auto, home, or business insurance please consider the type of agent you are buying from. Ask yourself who's interest does my agent have in mind?
